Richard Collins, the naturist activist who has become well-known in andaround Cambridge for his naked cycling exploits, has been arrestedwhile cycling naked around Picadilly Circus with a placard saying“Naked for Peace”.
The incident took place on the evening of 22 July, around four hoursafter a ‘Stop War Coalition’ march and rally at Hyde Park Corner.Police have charged him under section 5 of the Public Order Act withconduct likely to "harassment, alarm or distress"
Collins, who has twice stood unsuccessfully as a candidate for elected office in British Naturism, expressed himself "delighted" at his arrest on his "Go Bare"website. He intends to contest the charge and hopes to be granted legalaid. He will be represented by Bindman's solicitors - specialists inhuman rights cases.
"I wouldn't describe myself as militant," he says. "I'm just prepared to push the boundaries."
Hicase will be heard at Horseferry Road Magistrates Court at 10:00am onMonday 31st July 2006. Unlike previous campaigners for body freedomsuch as Vincent Bethell and Steve Gough, Collins promises not to turnup naked at the court.
