Eric Crew died on 2nd December 2005 aged 89, after suffering from a stroke. Best-known to fellow naturists for his eclectic articles in Mark Nisbet's sadly short-lived 'Starkers' magazine, Eric was an electrical engineer by profession and passionately interested in all aspects of science, especially astronomy.
Noting that a jet ejected from the sun had the characteristics of lightning, Eric developed a 'Theory of the Universe', based on the idea that electricity can shape matter and had a paper "Lightning in Astronomy" published in Nature in December 1974. He also had work published Observatory Magazine, the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Journal of Meterology among others. Following the exploits of 'the naked rambler' Eric even appeared naked on the front page of a local paper - his decency preserved with the aid of a strategically positioned Ordnance Survey map. A life-long advocate of re-cycling Eric was - by his own request - given a green burial under a tree in a bamboo coffin. Eric Crew is survived by his second wife June, and five children.
